Stanislaus Piccolo® Datterini Baby Plum Tomatoes

Regular price $7.48

Hand-picked in California, these heirloom baby plum tomatoes are sweet, savory, mildly tangy and bursting with full-bodied tomato flavor—straight from the jar. Supermarket canned tomatoes are often tinged with tinny, metallic off-flavors that require careful seasoning to fix, but not these. Datterini translates to “Little Date,” which is no surprise as the little tomatoes are just that sweet. (They’re only slightly bigger than a large cherry tomato, and the small size is key to their rich, concentrated flavor and low acidity.) In fact, these tomatoes are so good right from the jar that you can eat them on toast with fresh herbs and a drizzle of EVOO. Even the purée they’re packed in is delicious: It needs nothing more than some good olive oil and a touch of salt to become the best no-cook pizza sauce we’ve ever had. Of course, you can also use these tomatoes in soups, stews, chili and braises. A rare variety of tomato, Piccolo® Datterini were previously available only to family and friends or in exclusive gift sets, but we were able to secure some for stand-alone purchases—you won’t find them anywhere else but Milk Street.
